"A Little Slice of Sky"
A memoir of growing up in the Wilds of northern Idaho
It's July 1948. My parents, with me and my three sisters in tow, pull up roots from our urban home in Lewiston, and move to the wilds of the Idaho panhandle. We spend the first 4 months in the rough, hard-rock mining town of Kellogg before moving into our home on the west fork of Moon Creek.
I will spend nine years there, from November 1948 to August 1957, growing from a 5½-year-old to a teenager. Without a phone, without a TV, and with no nearby neighbors.
Imagine you are a naturally introverted kid with artistic aspirations. Is growing up in this secluded wild place, tucked into a narrow valley between forested mountains, a blessing or a curse? "A Little Slice of Sky" reflects on how the isolation affected me and my family, and how that specific place helped shape my adult personality and passion for art.

"Your ability to remember and describe the thoughts and feelings of a young person without the influence and baggage of age and experience is most remarkable. A Little Slice of Sky is real and understandable with an innocent point of view—very hard for an adult to achieve!
Perhaps more clearly than in years past, I have remembered events of my childhood during WWII, and I was able, with your example, to recall the wonder of discovering nature and the complexities of the people around me. Thank you!"
- Sally W.

I loved it from first to last page. I think you have a gem in A Little Slice of Sky. It is beautifully put together and you have shown that you can paint pictures with words as well as you paint with watercolors and mixed media.
You did a super job of introducing a talented youngster growing up with so much wilderness to nurture your artistic side. And you shared an amazing ability to survive family hardship and emotional stress that broke my heart in the reading. I'm so glad you have shared your story and I am absolutely certain it will touch those who read it
